Donkeys at Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary

Meet and pet friendly donkeys at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, a much-loved attraction set in the peaceful Wroxall Valley near Ventnor.

Home to over 100 donkeys and ponies

Founded in 1987, the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary provides a safe, permanent home for donkeys and equines in need, including many older animals and those with specialist health requirements.

Today, the sanctuary cares for over 100 donkeys and ponies, each with their own unique personality. As you wander around the site, you’ll often find curious donkeys coming over for a gentle pat or scratch over the fence.

Explore acres of countryside

Set across more than 55 acres of beautiful countryside, the sanctuary offers peaceful walks, a wildlife meadow and scenic views across the valley. It also connects to local footpaths leading towards Godshill and Appuldurcombe, making it ideal for combining with a longer walk.

Get closer with a Donkey Experience

For a truly memorable visit, you can book the popular Donkey Experience. This behind-the-scenes session gives you the chance to help care for the donkeys, from grooming and mucking out to plenty of donkey cuddles. It’s a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours and must be booked in advance.

Supporting the sanctuary

The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary is a charity and relies entirely on donations, adoptions and fundraising to continue its vital work. If you enjoy your visit, you can support the sanctuary by making a donation or adopting a donkey and receiving updates throughout the year.

Café, shop and treats to enjoy

Take a break at the café inside a converted barn, serving seasonal light meals, snacks, homemade cakes and cream teas. Afternoon tea is also available, but must be booked at least 48 hours in advance.

Before you leave, pop into the gift shop for souvenirs, gifts and the sanctuary’s own Isle of Wight gin.
